£5 Notes

Sian James MP asked a question to the Chancellor on the numbers of £5 notes in circulation

Sian James MP said:

"Concerns have been drawn to my attention on the availability of £5 notes and the quality of those in circulation.

"Many of the £5 notes in circulation are in very poor condition and are not available from cash points. I believe that the £5 note is as popular as ever before and should be made more widely available.

"The Government has informed me that at the end of February 2008 there was approximately £1,250 million of £5notes in circulation.

"The annual growth rate of £5 notes in circulation has risen from 5% to 10%. Despite this, often when you go into a shop, they often run out of £5 notes quickly. More needs to be done to make them available from cash points."
