Novice Drivers

Sian James MP has raised concerns in a Commons debate on issues faced by Novice drivers.

Sian James MP participated in a Westminster Hall debate on the Transport Select Committee's Report into Novice Drivers and the Government response to the report.

Sian James MP said: -

"I had two reasons for participating in the debate, the DVLA, which issues road driving licences to new drivers who have recently passed their test, is located in Swansea East. Secondly, I have received concerns from young people on the issue of novice drivers and what effect any new proposals will have on them.

"I want all young people and / or novice drivers, whatever their age, to be safe at all times, wherever and whenever they are driving on our roads. I am very pleased that the Government shares the Committee’s concern about serious accidents involving young drivers. Learning to drive is one of the important milestones on the road to adulthood and this should be achieved in the most safe and sensible ways possible.

"However, many of my constituents have expressed genuine concerns on this issue, particularly where young people are involved in traffic accidents, which have resulted in the deaths of other young people.

"I recognise that the majority of young people are safe and sensible drivers and several have approached me following the publication of the committee’s report and the Government’s response. One articulate young man sent me a summary of his concerns on potential Government action against novice drivers. I raised these in the debate."
