Phising Emails - 15th Jan, 2008

Constituents have written to Sian James MP concerned about fraudulent banking emails
Sian James MP said:"A number of people in Swansea East have complained to me regarding emails, which appear to be sent from their bank or building society, requesting sensitive banking data.
"These are fraudulent and are known as ‘phishing’. In computer jargon, ‘phishing’ is an attempt to criminally and fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details. 1 in 20 computer users in 2005, reported that they had been subject to this form of fraud.
"Even my own Parliamentary email address has received a number of these emails, so the problem is widespread. If you believe you may have shared personal data, it is best to contact your bank immediately, via the appropriate email address. Your bank will then investigate further.
"I have asked a number of Parliamentary Questions on this subject. I would like to see the banking industry undertake a series of advertisements to raise awareness of this problem.
"Let me know your views; Are you concerned? Have you received a phishing email? You can write to me at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA or email me on sianjamesmp@parliament.uk"
