Advising Young People on Sunbeds

Sian James MP has received an answer to her question relating to what the Sunsmart Campaign intends to concentrate on in the future.

Sian James MP received a answer to a question to the Minister of Public Health, Caroline Flint MP about what the Sunsmart Campaign will concentrate on in the future.

Sian said: "I am delighted that the Sunsmart Campaign will be concentrating on the use of sunbeds by under-18s throughout the next three years.

"This is something that I have been asking the campaign to do for sometime. We need to ensure that young people know the risks of using tanning machines.

"Even though the campaign will now advice under-18s on the use of this equipment, this does not mean that my campaign on inappropriate use and unstaffed salons is over. Far from it."

Caroline Flint MP, Minister for Public Health said:-

"The key messages for the next phase of SunSmart (2007-10) are:

the importance of early detection;
avoidance of burning;
the dangers of sunbed use (especially by those under 18); and
an emphasis on highlighting those most at risk of skin cancer (i.e. people with fair skin, lots of moles or freckles or a family history of skin cancer).

The target audience for 2007 is holidaymakers.

Information about the SunSmart campaign and available resources are on the SunSmart website at:
