MP welcomes Government Sunbed Leaflet Update - 28th Feb, 2007

Sian James MP has welcomed a Government response to a Parliamentary Question about the Health and Safety Sunbed Leaflet
The leaflet INDG209 is issued by the Health and Safety Executive in order to inform trained staff and customers of tanning salons about controlling the Health Risks from the use of UV tanning equipment.Sian James MP asked the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions to update the Health & Safety Executives leaflet to include warnings about the use of unstaffed tanning salons.
Sian James MP said:
"The current leaflet dates from 1995. In the information it suggests that trained staff will be available for customers to request information on safe tanning techniques.
"The world of tanning has now moved on since the mid-1990s in the UK. Since then we have seen an explosion in automated tanning centres that are unstaffed. I am pleased the Government will now update the health and safety leaflet and include consideration of warning about the use.
"Even though the Government is now considering including warning about unstaffed salons, this does not mean that I accept that unstaffed salons should continue to operate in their present form. I want to see trained staff in such salons. I am glad that the Government is to consider warnings, however I look forward to every salon having staff and licensing in the industry."
